Emmy Winner: FIRESTORM
NOW WITH TOM BROKAW AND KATIE COURIC, November 3, 1993: NBC's Mike Boettcher reported the dramatic story of a devastating wild fire in southern California, not from a command post but with camera crews that were allowed unusual access to neighborhoods as they burned to the ground. Producer Michael Austin and his camera crew, Maurice Roper and Stan Ouse, documented the work of firefighters at extremely close range, including a firestorm that encircled them on all sides in the hills above Malibu. The result was an Emmy for Outstanding General Coverage of a Single Breaking News Story (Segment). This team coverage was also recognized for the work of producers Martha Caskey and Polly Powell and camera crew Bruce Gray and Willis Shobe.
